The everyday makeup kit: what you actually use

Most makeup bags hold twenty products and get used for six. Here is how to work out which six they are, and what a genuinely daily kit looks like.

Audit before you add

Empty the bag onto a towel and put things back only as you use them over the next week. Whatever is still on the towel on day seven is not part of your everyday kit — it is occasion makeup, and it belongs somewhere else. Most people find their real routine is five or six items applied in the same order every morning.

Build around that order. A daily kit should fit in a small pouch and be usable in ten minutes at a bathroom mirror without hunting for anything.

One base you trust

Everyday base is about consistency rather than coverage. A colour-adapting liquid foundation removes the daily shade decision, which is the single most common reason a base gets abandoned. Apply it in the centre of the face and blend outward; the edges should fade rather than stop.

If your skin is behaving, skipping base entirely and using concealer only where you want it is a perfectly good everyday routine.

Lashes, liner, brows: the three-minute face

Mascara is the highest-return product in any kit. Formulas differ mostly in the brush: a curved, tapered brush lifts and separates, while a denser brush builds volume. Colour matters too — a very black formula reads softer in daylight than the blackest option, which suits a daytime routine.

A pencil eyeliner smudged along the upper lash line gives definition without the commitment of a wing, and it survives the school run better than most liquid liners. A brow pencil used in short, light strokes fills gaps without drawing a shape; the goal is the brow you already have, slightly more present.

A lip you can apply without looking

Everyday lip products live in a coat pocket, so choose ones that survive being applied without a mirror. A butter gloss gives colour and comfort and is forgiving of imprecise application. A longwear lip stain holds through coffee and lunch, which is the point of it. A peel-off lip stain liner is the longest-wearing option of the three and suits days with no chance to reapply.

Finish with removal

Micellar cleansing water on a pad takes mascara and base off in a single pass and does not require a sink, which is why it stays in use when a full cleansing routine does not. Keep it with the kit rather than in a cupboard — it is part of the daily set, not a separate ritual.
